LATEST: Nicholas Gomes-Suppa appeared before Judge Susan I. Kettner on Friday for the first time since he was released from the Westchester County Jail WHEN after posting HOW MUCH bail? Gomes-Suppa’s attorney told Judge Kettner she has been in “favorable discussions with the ADA” that may lead to a disposition in the case.

WHY: There is definitely something fishy about this case. The original press statement by the New Rochelle Police Department is odd. For starters, the Public Information Officer did not write that press release and did not send it to the media. It was written and sent by the PIO for the City of New Rochelle which rarely if ever sends out statements about arrests. In the two weeks after the arrest, I sought comment from the NRPD PIO who has declined to answer ANY questions about this matter which is atypical. Neither the NRPD nor the City of New Rochelle provided photos of the weapons but photos were published on the NRPD PBA Facebook page.

There is a political context to this case. New Rochelle is run by a City Manager who is apolitical. New Rochelle has a Mayor who is NOT an executive but rather chairs City Council meetings, cuts ribbons and officiates at weddings. He is *highly* political. Mayor Noam Bramson (D) is stridently anti-gun. He ran for Westchester County Executive in 2013 and was soundly defeated by incumbent Rob Astorino (R) who went on to run against Andrew Cuomo for governor and (obviously) lost. The PIO for the City of New Rochelle routinely sends out “political” press releases on behalf of the Mayor.

The press release uses uninformed, politicized, and inaccurate information. For example, describing an AR-15 as an “assault” rifle and in term, I have never heard an “assault” shotgun and very common 10-round magazines as “high capacity” magazines. It is unlike anything I have ever seen from NRPD but very similar to how Mayor Bramson talks about guns. The press release does not state the charges filed against Suppa. In all my years, I have never seen an NRPD press release that did not state anything about charges, arraignment info, or return date.
