2024 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin

DUBLIN, IRELAND (March 9, 2025) — There is a common idea in the United States that St. Patrick’s Day represents Ireland — and everyone wears green and is Irish. Living here for going on two years, I do not think so. I attended the parade in Dublin last year and found it to be more of an Irish version of the New York parade. This year I plan on attending a small-town parade, which may give me a better sense of things here.

Meanwhile, I wrote about American tourists visiting Ireland to connect with their roots and how the Irish view what they call “plastic paddies”: As St. Patrick’s Day Approaches, Americans Ask: Am I Irish?

Kari Bird was honored at a Promotion Ceremony in City Hall on Friday. She and her sister were both promoted. Looking at the NRPD Facebook page I noticed that the swearing in was not done by the Mayor, as typically the case, but by the City Clerk. Some people may reply to my pointing this out by saying that Mayor Ramos was at the SOMOS conference in Albany with Adam Salgado and Will Melendez. My reply to that is, the City could have scheduled this promotion ceremony at any time. I think it’s hardly accidental that it was planned for a day when Yadira was scheduled to be out of town. I believe she would rather not be the one swearing in Kari Bird at her new rank. Am I wrong?

A year ago, I noticed a flood of TV ads here in Ireland for Pancake Day which was bizarre and confusing to me. I had to go online to search for the term. I learned that Pancake Tuesday is also known as Shrove Tuesday, is a Christian observance that falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. Basically, Mardi Gras for breakfast food. In many cultures, it’s a day of feasting and celebration before the more solemn season of Lent. Who knew?
