Special Education “Mistake” Costs New Rochelle Board of Education Millions — Part IV
This is part 4 of a 4 part series
NEW ROCHELLE, NY (October 11, 2024) — The activism of the parent(s) of Student 2 frightened District leadership. The parent(s) emailed Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa, who then called Superintendent Dr. Laura Feijóo.
Commissioner of Education and President of the University of the State of New York Shannon Tahoe, a longtime NYSED lawyer, got involved, as did Assistant Commissioner of the New York State Education Department’s Office of Special Education Christopher Suriano, Chief of Special Education Services, and Special Education Quality Assurance Eastern Regional Office Kathleen Milliman. NYSED Regional Associate Kim Lori Divine sought and received daily updates for months. State Senator Shelley Mayer got involved, calling Feijóo.
The activism with state officials backfired on the parent(s) because state officials were alarmed to discover New Rochelle students had been placed at Shrub Oak.
